Boston’s Central Artery/Rose Kennedy Greenway project removed an elevated highway that divided the city and created a new at grade landscape corridor, transforming the entire city center. This 17-acre, 1.5-mile greenspace over a tunneled portion of the highway winds through several downtown neighborhoods and draws residents and tourists alike to enjoy the park’s diverse features and year-round programs. Pine & Swallow planned for new horticultural soil resources and provided master soil specifications for planting soils and for sand-based structural soil systems. As individual park segments came online for design and development, Pine & Swallow’s consulting services were engaged by several different landscape architecture firms as well as by the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. Pine & Swallow provided plant palette-specific soil and drainage designs and provided construction phase services for each of those development projects.
