The Esplanade in front of the Hatch Shell is the iconic image of a public lawn area. The lawn is used as seating for multiple concerts each year, but is especially known for the Boston Pops 4th of July concerts, when several hundred thousand people come to the area. The lawn area received a complete reconstruction in 2015 including redesigned grading, under drainage, and modification of the existing soils to support the new turf. Pine & Swallow conducted a site investigation and developed strategies for soil amendments, drainage and turf grass blends, and provided construction observation.
