For two projects, Pine & Swallow led the horticultural soils design for the flexible, universally accessible renovation of Boston’s City Hall Plaza. Because many shallow subsurface utilities traverse the site, including a major subway tunnel, horticultural soils were designed to respond to programming goals. The now finished Government Center transit station with bicycle and pedestrian-friendly facilities have helped to transform the plaza into a multi-modal transportation hub complete with large shade trees planted in the permeable paved plaza.
